Voices of Courage 2008 Honorees

Kulah Borbor, Liberia

Kulah Borbor is a peer educator with the International Rescue Committee’s gender-based violence program in Liberia. She raises awareness about and works to prevent female genital mutilation in her community. She is constructing a women’s center and establishing an adult literacy school to help women live lives free from violence and have equal opportunities.

Gistam Sakaeva, Chechnya

Gistam Sakaeva works at Doveriya (Reliance), a local organization in Chechnya, with women who suffer from domestic violence. She works with perpetrators of violence against women who are serving jail time, and is spearheading programs and trainings in women’s rights to raise awareness of discrimination and violence against women.

 


Shreen Abdul Saroor, Sri Lanka

Shreen Abdul Saroor is a co-founder of the Mannar Women’s Development Foundation, which helps Muslim and Tamil women displaced by violence in?Sri Lanka. She founded Mannar Women for Human Rights and Democracy, which seeks to bring international attention to the rampant problem of violence against women and girls in Sri Lanka.
